The Ministry of Defence is established to formulate, implement, monitor and evaluate strategic defence policy
for the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces that is effective and fostered within a framework of democratic governance.
FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE
The functions and responsibilities of the Ministry of Defence are
Ministry of Defence provides guidance to the military headquarters (JFC) so that military preparations are made in accordance with the wishes of the Government.
Central function of the Ministry of Defence is to make Defence Policy
Ministry of Defence has the role of demonstrating to the Finance Ministry that it both needs the money it has been allocated and is using it well.
The Ministry of Defence act as the link between the military and other government departments (OGDs).
The Ministry of Defence answers questions of the Legislature on Defence matters
The Ministry of Defence has a public affairs role. It deals with the media as well as the public.
Ministry of Defence ensures that the policy guidance and priorities from political authorities are reflected in the plans and budgets for the use of defence money
The Ministry of Defence performs a quality management role
The Objectives of the Sierra Leone Ministry of Defence are:
Formulate and implements strategic Defence Policy
Develop and maintain a re-structured and robust RSLAF that is well trained, well disciplined and well cared for.
To equip and provide logistic support to the RSLAF
To transform the RSLAF into an organisation that is accountable, incorruptible and subject to democratic control.
To continually evolve and improve the RSLAF
Deliver the endorsed Defence Missions and Military Tasks.
